Facebook is preparing to launch Vanity URLs for Facebook profiles and pages, according to Facebook Blog starting this weekend users can have the Vanity URLs (user names) for their profiles. The usernames will be assigned on first come first served basis, so grab your favorite URL immediately as they are available.
Until now Facobook URLs contain a string of characters but with the new username feature they will look like “http://facebook.com/itsmetsmeâ€.
Starting at 12:01 a.m. EDT on Saturday, June 13, you’ll be able to choose a username on a first-come, first-serve basis for your profile and the Facebook Pages that you administer by visiting www.facebook.com/username/. You’ll also see a notice on your home page with instructions for obtaining your username at that time.
Nor only profiles but pages also can have vanity URLs, but there is a catch, for Pages to have vanity URL it should have at least 1000 fans as of May 31, 2009. This is to stop abuse of the system by registering mass accounts to grab the popular usernames. Also generic terms can’t be put as usernames.
If you want to have a custom URL for your Facebook profile remember to grab your username.

Hosting a Facebook vanity URL party on Twitter. Use #fburlparty in a tweet & it will show up on this page. http://bit.ly/10xK1W

Thanks for the info!
I got my name as the username.
You don’t need 1,000 Fans to get your own username.
Your Facebook account must be registered before June 9 as the only criteria.

@Mike
1000 fans requirement is not for Profiles, that is for pages.
