We all have seen rumors about the existence of cloud storage service called GDrive from Google. After several false alarms Google Drive or GDrive might be launching finally this April according to GigaOm. We are not sure whether GDrive will launch fir sure this time, If it does it is coming in the first week of April, not too far.
Google Cloud Storage service will offer 1GB of storage to users for free and there are paid plans for more storage according to the report. In comparison Dropbox offers 2GB of free storage and the storage space can be bumped if you participate in beta testing. Microsoft’s SkyDrive offers 25GB of free space to users, launched several years ago it is not popular like Dropbox, but recently Microsoft is adding features to SkyDrive make it worthwhile competitor in the cloud storage service space.
GDrive will come with a local client and a web interface that is similar in look to Google Docs. It will be launched for Google Apps customers also and will be domain specific. It will offer an API for third party apps so that other app data can be stored with Google Drive. While API is a welcome feature it remains to be seen whether it gets any traction if launched with 1GB of free storage as competitors offerings are high.
It could also be that the 1GB free space is for the official launch time and Google will gradually increase the limit as in the case of Gmail.
One big opportunity for immediate user adoption is integrating with Gmail so that users can upload large files to GDrive and send links through Gmail to others. SkyDrive works similarly.
