Microsoft has launched Skype Lite aimed at Indian users. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced at the Future Decoded event in Mumbai. As the name suggests it is a lite version of the app for those who don’t have faster network connectivity. Most of the rural and semi urban population is still using 2G or slower connections, to cater these users Microsoft has launched this app.
The app is lightweight and works on older Android devices too, this is important because lot of older budget Android phones from the likes of Micromax and others were left behind without upgrades, so this app may be good for those users. Skype is definitely not battery friendly and and the Skype Lite app addresses this, it uses less battery according to Skype. Video calls use lot of mobile data, Skype Lite comes with a reduced data usage mode that saves data while making video calls.
Skype Lite also works with SMS messages. The app is optimized for 2G or unstable network connections. Skype Lite is available in Indian languages including Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. It also comes with chat bots designed exclusively for India.
Skype Lite also integrated Aadhaar identification into the app, users can easily verify the other person before making a conversation. It’s use has been demonstrated with a remote interview call on stage.
