Windows Phone 8.1 will bring support for the Bluetooth LE (Low Energy) when it launches. But Windows Phone 8.1 won’t come until sometime next year, meanwhile Nokia is preparing to rollout support for Bluetooth LE with the upcoming Black Update for Lumia phones running Windows Phone 8.
Nokia Black Update will come with the Lumia 1520 phablet, launched last month at Nokia World it is expected soon. The firmware includes several improvements to the camera, new features to the glance screen and also include Bluetooth LE support.
If you are wondering what is Bluetooth LE standard, it allows small accessories like heart rate monitors, or accessories like Fitbit to constantly in Sync with the phone but do not drain the batteries of those accessories.
Bluetooth LE support for Lumia 520, 620, 625, and 720 is already pushed with the Amber update according to Nokia. With the Black update all other Lumia’s running Windows Phone 8. The update is expected to roll out before the end of the year or early next year.
Bluetooth LE allows you to connect your phone with special accessories like heart rate monitors. While doing that, thanks to Bluetooth LE connection, the accessory battery will last much longer, up to months.
It is already available for 520, 620, 625, and 720 with Amber. With Lumia Black software update, Bluetooth LE will be enabled across the full WP8 Lumia range.
