Samsung has unveiled Galaxy Grand 2 yesterday, its successor to the Galaxy Grand smartphone launched sometime back. Galaxy Grand will compete with the likes of Micromax Canvas Turbo, and Sony Xperia C. Micromax launched the Canvas Turbo to address the short comings of the Canvas 4. Micromax Canvas Turbo and Sony Xperia C are doing well in the market and now the arrival of Galaxy Grand 2 these two will have some competition.
Let us compare the phones as such and see what they offer to the consumer and which one is better than others by comparing their specifications.

Display: When it comes to display the new Galaxy Grand offers a big screen with HD resolution with decent pixel density (280ppi). Sony Xperia C on the other hand comes with 5-inch screen with scratch resistant protection, but it only offers qHD resolution (960 x 540 pixels), its pixel density is also very less compared to the other two. Micromax Canvas Turbo offers best of both worlds with bigger screen and with better pixel density. It comes with 5-inch screen with full HD resolution (1920 x 1080p), pixel density of 441ppi is just great, you won’t find this kind of high ppi screen in Samsung or Sony at this price.
Dimensions: Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 is the bulkiest phone in this lot with 163grams weight, but it is the biggest and has bigger battery that adds to its weight. Xperia C is in the middle with 153grams. Canvas Turbo wins this department with its slim design, thin bezels and overall less weight at 137grams.
Processor: Galaxy Grand 2 has a 1.2GHz Quad Core Processor, we don’t know the make of the processor, probably a Qualcomm Snapdragon. Xperia C has Quad Core MediaTek MT6589 processor clocked at 1.2GHz, while the Canvas Turbo has the same processor clocked at higher speed, 1.5GHz Quad Core MT6589T. Processor wise Canvas Turbo might be better.
Memory:Xperia C lags behind others in the memory department. It comes with just 1GB of RAM and 4GB of ROM. It has support for micro SD card so you can expand the internal storage. But with just 1GB of RAM you might feel like strained when you need performance. Galaxy Grand 2 comes with 1.5GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage which can be expanded upto 64GB using a micro SD card. Canvas Turbo has 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, which is better than other two phones in this lot. But the Turbo lacks the expandable memory slot.
Software: All these phones run on Android Jelly Bean operating system. Galaxy Grand 2 comes with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean out of the box. Both Xperia C and Canvas Turbo are running on Android 4.2, Sony might update it to the Android 4.3 or 4.4 in near future as it said earlier that it will release updates for 2013 devices. We don’t know about updates for Canvas Turbo as Micromax is not the one which regularly updates its phones.
Battery: When it comes to battery life Galaxy Grand 2 houses the bigger capacity battery compared to other phones and it might provide longer battery life as well due to this. Xperia C is somewhere in the middle. Canvas Turbo has the smaller battery compared to other in the lot.
Camera: We haven’t really tested the camera performance of these phones side by side, so we can’t judge them yet. But megapixels is any indication then Canvas Turbo has the highest at 13MP, while the other two have 8MP Cameras at the rear. Micromax cameras as we have seen it in the past are not good enough in the real world conditions, particularly in low light. Megapixels won’t alone give you better results. But looking at the specs Canvas Turbo looks better.
Conclusion: As you can see from the comparison table Canvas Turbo has better specifications in most of the departments compared to others in this list. If you want better hardware and you don’t have preference for a brand then you can go for Micromax Canvas Turbo with out thinking too much. Micromax build quality has increased so much in the recent past and remember it is the fastest growing mobile brand in India.
If you prefer bigger screens and Samsung’s faux leather back which gives somewhat premium feel you can go for it. Samsung’s service is better than Micromax and the phone will serve you good for years to come.
Sony Xperia C with it thin bezels and straight lines has unique design and looks brilliant. If you prefer looks and build quality then you should go for the Xperia C.
Galaxy Grand 2 is expected to be priced at around Rs. 22,000, Canvas Turbo is currently retailing at Rs. 18750 on Flipkart, Xperia C is retailing at Rs. 17997 on Flipkart.
