MediaTek has introduced MT6592 Octa-core processor last year and from that time we are seeing influx of octa-core smartphones i the Indian market. Indian budget brands and Chinese companies are embracing this MediaTek processors and releasing phones, last year was the time of dual-core and quad-core smartphones and this year we have moved on to octa-core smartphones.
Recently Micromax has released Canvas Knight smartphone, its first octa-core smartphone in Russia and India. Earlier Gionee has released Elife E7 mini with the same processor inside. Karbonn is not left behind and they too have released octa-core smartphone in the form of Karbonn Titanium Octane Plus. It is a battle of Octa-core smartphones here in India. Micromax Canvas Knight review suggests that it is a capable phone with good specifications and attractive design, let us see how the other two phones compare to it in terms of specifications.

Display: Both the Octane Plus and Canvas knight feature a 5-inch IPS display with full HD resolution (1920 x 1080p), with pixel density of 441 pixels. You can’t go wrong with either of them. While the Gionee E7 mini uses a 4.7-inch HD resolution screen (1280 x 720p), it is a IGZO screen with 312ppi, no so bad in terms of pixel density. But definitely inferior than the other two and the screen may not look as vibrant as the other two.
Build/ Design: Design wise these phones are pretty good, unlike typical Android devices with rounded corners these differ from their predecessors. The Karbonn Titanium Octane Plus and the Gionee Elife E7 both look more rectangular, something similar to Nokia Lumia or Xperia devices. On he other hand the Micromax Canvas Knight looks more like an iPhone, that is a good thing actually. Earlier Micromax looked like Samsung devices, this is a huge departure for Micromax in terms of design. The Gionee E7 mini is a bit thicker than the Octane Plus and we don’t know the exact dimensions of Micromax Canvas Knight.
Processor: All three phones compared here use the same processor. The MediaTek MT6592 Octa-core processor is the one that is powering these devices. Micromax Canvas Knight is using the processor in turbo mode with the processor clocked at 2GHz. The other two are using the processor at standard clock speed that is 1.7GHz. Micromax Canvas Knight should give better performance while running certain applications or games on the phone.
Memory: Both Canvas Knight and Octane Plus come with 2GB of RAM inside and the Gionee E7 mini comes with just 1GB of RAM. 2GB of RAM really helps the other two while running memory intensive programs on Knight and Octane Plus. When it comes to internal storage Canvas Knight comes with 32GB of storage with no micro SD card support. The Karbonn Octane Plus comes with 16GB of internal storage along with micro SD card support upto 32GB. The Gionee E7 mini comes with just 16GB memory with no micro SD card support. If you are a gamer ad want more storage you should select the first two.
Software: Karbonn Titanium Octane Plus is the only phone in this lot that runs on latest Android 4.4 KitKat, the rest of the two, Canvas Knight and Gionee E7 mini run on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and not even 4.3. Gionee comes with Amigo OS on top of he Android. Micromax has done lot of customizations to its Android UI recently with the introduction of gesture supports, some of these features might not be useful much but nevertheless they are there for differentiation. Micromax includes its own app store and some games with heir phones, and other also do this kind of pre-loading to some extent. But none of these pre-loaded apps and games are exciting to the end user.
Battery: Battery is the weakest point when it comes to the Karbonn Octane Plus, it comes with a 2000mAh battery under the hood, if you use your phone heavily you might have to charge more than once. Gionee E7 mini with relatively low resolution screen gets 2200mAh battery, while the Canvas Knight comes with 2350mAh battery.
Camera: Octane Plus and Canvas Knight come with similar spec cameras, they both have 16MP autofocus rear cameras, LED flash. They both include 8MP front cameras, you can pretty good selfies with these phones, helps for social butterflies. Gionee Elife E7 mini comes with a 13MP Swivel camera, that means you can rotate the camera both front and rear and take pictures depending on the situation. Although Gionee gets a less MP camera the real world performance of the camera varies and pixels only won’t determine the overall quality of he camera.
Conclusion: If you look at the specifications and compare these three phones, it is clear that the Microma Canavas Knight seems better in all departments. Karbonn Octane Plus loses in the low battery power and the list of sensors. Karbonn scores big on Android version, it comes with Android 4.4 put of the box while the other two are just Android 4.2 phones. Micromax and Karbonn track record is not so good when it comes to pushing Android updates and we don’t know much about the Gionee. Gionee loses in the screen big time, it comes with HD screen while the other two are full HD screens. Canvas Knight is available in the market, Karbonn Octane Plus will be available in stores from next month onwards. Gionee launched Elife E7 mini in India earlier but it is not available in stores as of now.
