Mozilla has announced the Firefox OS at MWC 2013 and showed devices from ZTE and Alcatel at that time, more manufacturers like LG and Huawei are lining up devices for the launch in the future. The first Firefox OS based smartphones will debut in June this year in at least 5 countries to start with, Mozilla CEO Gary Kovacs said at the D: Dive Into Mobile conference.
Mozilla is making the Firefox OS with open web standards like HTML5 and is positioning the Firefox OS as the truly open platform. At the time of the launch Mozilla said the first devices will be launched in Brazil, Colombia, Hungary, Mexico, Montenegro, Poland, Serbia, Spain and Venezuela. Now Mozilla CEO says the first FF OS based phones will launch in 5 countries including Brazil, Portugal, Spain, Poland and Venezuela.
According to him there are no immediate plans to launch these devices in US, but they will launch in US in 2014. Sprint has already partnered with Mozilla for launching Firefox OS phone. Kovacs reportedly said that he is waiting for the ecosystem to develop before entering the US market.
