Gmail for Android is updated to version 4.6, the update is rolling out to users it brings a cleaner conversation view and a card style UI and some new features. Google announced the version on its Plus account but omitted one bit of important information that Gmail for Android now supports ads in Gmail. Android Police conducted an APK tear down and found several references to ads in the apk file.
For the record Gmail on Android remained ad-free till now, but the web version has ads always. The new ads references in the apk points that ads are coming to Android Gmail soon. Interestingly the ads on Android Gmail can be saved as regular messages if users like them or can be dismissed right away. In the web version ads appear like messages in the promotions folder if you observe, we are expecting ads on Gmail for Android to be the same way, but we don’t know exactly until we see something.
Other features include Unsent messages warning inside Gmail, if the message is not sent for any reason you will see a warning inside Sent folder, which is quite useful in our opinion. Another feature is that contacts with no photos will have a picture with their first letter in the notifications. Now instead of canceling a message while composing you can just go back.
