Google is developing tools for porting Chrome apps to both Android and iOS platforms. You might already know that Chrome apps are web apps that can also work offline. Currently the Chrome apps are only available for desktop, and Google earlier hinted that these Chrome apps might also come to Android and iOS at some point but said that is still a long way. But a new report on The Next Web points out that these might be coming to Android and iOS as soon as next month.
The Next Web identified a GitHub respository Mobile Chrome Apps maintained by Michal Mocny, Google Software Developer. According to the documentation of the project , the toolkit they are developing will help developers create Android and iOS hybrid native apps using tools like Chrome app Polyfills, through Apache Cordova. Apache Cordova is a platform for developing native mobile applications using HTML, CSS and JavaScript. The Chrome apps for mobile flow includes mobile design tweaks, fixing bugs, working around limitations of the mobile platform, and testing.
Once the all the work is done, the apps are good enough to be published to Google’s Play Store and Apple’s App Store. A message on Google Groups by Google developer advocate Joe Marini confirms that they will be available by as early as next month, he wrote “We hope to have something in beta form in January.” So we can think that Chrome apps for Mobile is just a month away.
