Karbonn launched today a new iteration of it’s Smart Tab 1 running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for a price of Rs. 6,999. Karbonn Smart Tab 1 launched recently with Android Ice Cream Sandwich for the same price that is Rs. 6,999.
Karbonn Smart Tab 1 becomes the first Android Jelly Bean based tablet to launch in India. Although Google Nexus 7 is the first Jelly Bean tablet world wide it is not yet launched in India.
If you have already bought Karbonn Smart Tab 1 with ICS on it, you will get the Jelly Bean update soon. The new shipments will come with Jelly Bean out of the box. Currently you can buy from Karbonn mobiles website but soon this tablet will hit the retail stores including online retail stores.
Smart Tab1 is powered by a MIPS based 1.2GHz processor SoC, it comes with a 7-inch five point multi touch screen with 800×480 pixel resolution. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, HDMI port, 3g support via USB dongle. Other specifications include 2megapixel front camera, micro SD card slot for expanding memory upto 32GB, 3700 mAh battery.

is this locked to any 3g provider like Micromax funbook was to Tata photon?

No it is not tied to any telecom operator, you can use 3G USB dongle from any operator

Thanks for the clarification. I ordered the funbook and then cancelled it because it was tied to Photon. So the Karbonn seems like vary good alternative then. I can either buy a cheap tablet or iphone 3gs from aircel in the same budget… I want the tablet, but, my wife wants iPhone 🙁

iPhone is a good buy compared to this tablet. But again this 3GS iPhone is quite old. Consider it when buying. I would prefer iPhone any day than these cheap tablets
