Firefox OS unveiled originally at MWC this year, we have not seen many devices running on this OS so far, but this will change over time. Currently Firefox OS is nothing compared to other operating systems, but as other manufacturers embrace the OS we will see more and more devices in the market. So far only ZTE, and Alcatel have released phones, other like LG and Sony are also committed to the Firefox OS.
LG today released its first smartphone called LG Fireweb running Firefox OS in Brazil with Telefonica. Besides Brazil other Latin American countries that will see Firefox OS phones include Peru, Uruguay and Mexico.
The launch of Firefox OS in Brazil is a milestone for the country’s mobile industry, increasing the number of design options for intelligent devices (smartphones) and operating systems at affordable prices, based on open standards. Today’s launch also marks the world’s first launch of a LG Firefox OS device.
Jay Sullivan, COO of Mozilla, states, “We built Firefox OS as part of Mozilla’s mission to put the power of the Web in people’s hands and offer the best Web experience possible. We’re happy to see Firefox OS gain momentum with partners launching new devices in new markets and developers around the world being inspired to innovate. Our partnership with Telefónica Vivo demonstrates the rich, new experiences offered on Firefox OS by combining the best global and local content with LG’s elegant new device experience.”
LG Fireweb features a 4-inch display at 480 x 320 pixels resolution, that means 144ppi which is very low for a smartphone these days. It comes with a 5-megapixel camera for the shutterbugs along with a LED Flash. Firefox OS has the basic applications like Firefox browser, HERE maps for navigation, Social networks like Facebook and Twitter integration among other things. It is powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm processor, comes with 4GB of ROM and a micro SD slot.
It comes with the Firefox OS 1.1 version, according to Mozilla all Firefox OS 1.0 customers will also be upgraded to Firefox OS 1.1.
Price & Availability: It is not yet clear whether LG Fireweb will come to other parts of the world like Europe and Asia. As far as the pricing goes, it is priced at BRL449 ($207) and on contract it can be had for BRL129 ($59).
