According to reports Micromax is looking to assemble phones in India. Micromax currently imports phones from China and has tieups with Chinese manufacturers to build phones for Micromax. Micromax is the second largest smartphone vendor in India, beside its popularity it is still importing phones from China.
Assembling phones in India will give Micromax some advantages, the obvious one is the price, Micromax can mint higher profits, currently it operates in thin margins compared to its global rivals. Rahul Sharma, Co-founder of Micromax said to PTI that they have a plant in Rudrapur and they have already started assembling phones there on trial basis. Micromax will start assembling phones commercially starting early next year if the trial goes well.
Micromax is looking at other countries for growth, it set its eyes on Russia for now, after entering Russia it want to go to Europe as well. According to IDC Micromax has shipped more than 2 million smartphones and it holds the second spot for smartphone vendors in the Q2 of 2013. Its share increased from 18.8% to 22% in the last quarter and is fast closing the gap.
This year Micromax launched several devices, and it successfully established Canvas as a brand. It will launch another 20 smartphones in the next six months.
