Tizen is another alternate mobile operating system developed by Samsung and Intel. Samsung is expected to announce a smartphone running Tizen by the end of the year, but those plans were pushed to 2014. During Samsung developer summit there is a report that said Samsung’s Tizen smartphone might be released at CES 2014. Samsung may be taking its time to release first smartphone running Tizen, but it already released a commercial product running Tizen, NX300M camera that is released in Korea this October.
During Tizen developer summit Samsung’s executive VP Jong-Deok Choi presented slide showing that NX300M runs on Tizen camera platform, a variant of the Tizen operating system. According to the slide it boots 2x faster than other Linux based OS on cameras, enhanced capture performance- 20MP resolution and 9 shots per second.
Tizen is not confined to smartphones, it is expected to run on Smart TVs, cameras and other consumer electronics goods. Samsung with its vast consumer electronics portfolio is using Tizen to power those device. Tizen is an insurance for Samsung against Google’s Android.
The first Tizen smartphones are expected only in the first quarter of 2014 and they will run on Tizen 2.2.1 version of the OS. But they are also working on Tizen 3.0 OS which will be available for public release only in the third quarter of 2014, and these smartphones will probably updated to Tizen 3.0. The version 3.0 will bring support for multi-user accounts, 64 bit architecture which became talk of the town with the launch of Apple’s iPhone 5S running on 64-bit chip. It will also add support for IR and ARM chips, new 3D rendering engine and more features.
