Samsung has released the Galaxy Gear smartwatch back in September with the highly anticipated Galaxy Note 3 smartphone. The Galaxy Gear marked the entry of Samsung into wearable tech, but it is not one of the glorified entries for Samsung as Galaxy Gear is not selling as expected. According to a report on BusinessKorea Galaxy Gear sales are far below the expectations of the industry.
According to the report only 50,000 units of Galaxy Gear units have been moved off the shelves till date, the smartwatch is selling 800-900 odd units per day. Samsung pushed the Galaxy Gear with a marketing campaign but things didn’t help the sales of the watch are less than expected.
The Galaxy Gear when released is only compatible with Galaxy Note 3 and later Samsung added support for older Galaxy devices with Android 4.3 update but that didn’t help. Early reviews criticized the smartwatch for its bulkiness, limited functionality and higher price. Samsung has added support for notifications from any app in a later update, earlier only handful of apps can send notifications. Perhaps reducing the price and adding more features might address the issue. Do these numbers indicate that Galaxy Gear flopped in the market, we will know in the near future.
The report also points that Samsung’s curved smartphone Galaxy Round is also not selling well where it launched. But in this case the smartphone is more of showcase of the curved AMOLED panel tech than a mass product.
Update: Samsung says that the sales of Galaxy Gear are on track and they already sold 800,000 units so far, Reuters reports.
