Windows Phone 7 users are left in the cold when Windows phone 8 came to the market, as there is no upgrade path from Windows Phone 7 to Windows Phone 8. Microsoft executive Greg Sullivan said that WP 8 users won’t have this problem, they will receive upgrades in the future as the OS is fundamentally hardware independent. “We’re going to have an upgrade path going forward,” he said according to PC Mag
There are reports on Windows Blue, that is supposed to bring updates starting from Windows 8, RT to Windows Phone 8 devices. He didn’t comment on that. He says that Microsoft doesn’t want to announce next version of Windows phone months and months before it is available. They are in the middle of the WP 8 product cycle, next wave of Windows Phone 8 devices might launch before the next version of WP is released whether it is blue or GDR2. GDR stands for General Distribution Release, GDR2 came up recently in HTC Tiara leak. HTC Tiara is rumored to be that first one to carry this Windows Phone 8 GDR2 update, if the rumors are true.
Windows Phone 8 users should feel happy about the news that they will receive updates to their devices, unlike Windows Phone 7 users.
